Officer Identified as Victim of Car Accident

The identity of a young off-duty police officer killed in a car accident has finally been released to the public.

Jose Diance-Cruz, 23, who was assigned to the Los Angeles Police Department's Southwest station, was killed on the 101 Freeway in Sherman Oaks last week. According to one California Highway Patrol officer, the driver "drifted off the main travel portion of the roadway," straight into a metal guardrail. Although Officer Diance-Cruz was quickly transported to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, he died just two hours later.

When responding officers found Diance-Cruz, his body was badly injured. It was still belted into the driver's seat; however, the seat itself had been forced out of the pickup truck upon impact. The guard rail appeared to have pushed the seat and its occupant out of the rear window.
