Train Operator Loses Job for Texting

Even those who operate our public transport vehicles are guilty of texting while driving, and now one operator could lose her job for it.

When a passenger on a Muni bus noticed the driver texting while driving, he used his cell phone to record her actions. However, she soon realized what passenger Shawn Higgins was doing and yelled at him to get off the bus, swearing that she would never pick him up again. The agency gave her a three day suspension without pay since this was her first incident during the nine years spent working for Muni.

After reviewing the video footage, however, she could now lose her job. Not only is illegal to text while driving in the state, but it also violates agency regulations. In 2008 another public transport driver was caught texting while operating his vehicle, causing a train accident when he crashed into another train. That not only cost him his job, but left 16 people injured as a result and caused $1.2 million in damages.
