Boat Capsizes in Gulf of California

A boat carrying 27 American tourists capsized in the Gulf of California last week, leaving one dead and eight missing.

According to the Mexican Navy and U.S. Coast Guard, the boat wound up in the middle of a storm on Sunday afternoon, causing the boat to eject several passengers into the water. The rest were forced into the water when the boat capsized just off of San Luis Island. By Monday morning 19 tourists along with all 17 Mexican crew members had been rescued, after spending 16 hours clinging to life vests and coolers.

The Mexican Navy has announced that it will continue to search for the remaining eight passengers that are still at large. Navy members have been joined by several fishing boats as well as a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter. Since the weather has been warm and the waters relatively calm, there is still some hope that the missing people will be discovered alive.
