Dog Attacks Elderly Man and Police Officer
After a dog bit an elderly man in the leg it went on to attack the responding officer who fired his gun at it. When officers were called to the 400 block of Sandra Jean Street around 2:20 p.m. they saw the elderly man lying in the street. The dog was nearby and responded by biting an officer's boot. While the officer did fire his gun at the dog, he missed and it ran away.
After running around the block for a short time the dog returned home where it was taken into custody by animal control officers. The dog, a blue heeler mix, will be held in quarantine for a period of ten days in accordance with state law. According to animal control supervisor Jamie Shelton, "We can declare the animal dangerous, but first we are investigating the matter. That can take anywhere from 10 to 30 days." She added that the dog's owners have been fully cooperative throughout the investigation.
