Light Therpay Helps Victims fo TBI
Good news for patients with brain injury: a test using transcranial light therapy showed substantial improvement in two patients with traumatic brain injuries.
One of the patients was able to return to work after just four months of using the nightly, at-home treatment. Each night the patient was subjected to near-infrared light-emitting diodes (LED) placed on the scalp and forehead.
Another patient, who experienced closed-head TBI, was able to improve his attention span from just twenty minutes to three hours using the new technology.
Margaret A. Naeser, of Boston University and Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System, went on to say that both patients showed a regression when the light therapy was discontinued. She went on to post comments online in "Photomedicine and Laser Surgery" stating that "results from the two chronic TBI cases described here, along with those from previous [light therapy] studies with acute stroke patients and chronic, major depression cases, suggest that further, controlled research with this methodology is warranted." In fact, this treatment is relatively inexpensive and could lead to serious improvements in cognition for patients with TBI.
