Los Angeles May Shut Down Red Light System
The city of Los Angeles has three more months to utilize the much-debated red light camera system before it could be shut down forever.
The City Council approved a three month extension on the contract controlling the red light camera system. According to the Department of Transportation and the Los Angeles Police Department, the 32 cameras that are installed around the city are essential to improving motorist safety. While they have argued that it will be cost-effective over the long run, the three-month extension will cost the city an additional $750,000 to run the cameras.
Since the cameras were installed in 2006, the city has seen a drop in accidents at the monitored intersections by 63 percent; zero fatalities have been recorded at these same spots as well. Those who wish to shut down the camera program have argued that factors such as weather conditions, traffic patterns and accident figures need to be studied at intersections not being patrolled by cameras before coming to a final decision.
