Truck Accident Leads to Involuntary Manslaughter Charges and Sentence
What started as an accident turned into a case of involuntary manslaughter when a truck driver failed to heed warnings about a certain hill in California.
The 46-year-old truck driver was sentenced this week after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. After hearing hours of testimony regarding the truck accident, the jury found him guilty of the charge of involuntary manslaughter, but not second-degree murder.
Reports indicate that the accident happened on April 1, 2009 when the tractor-trailer driver drove down the San Gabriel Mountains. Before he started his journey, an off-duty fireman warned him about the steep gradient of the mountains, but the driver continued forth.
Although the driver did stop once to cool down his brakes, at some point, his brakes gave out and the vehicle crashed into several shops, killing a father and his 12-year-old daughter. The driver will now spend seven years behind bars for failing to maintain safe driving standards that are required in his industry.
