Five men are believed to have died in a boat accident off the coast of San Francisco, California last week. The men were participating in a yacht race when the weather conditions caused the boat to crash. While the body of one man has already been discovered, rescuers were forced to stop their search for the remaining four sailors. The waves were battering the rescue boat to such a degree that the effort was postponed. As a result, the remaining four victims are presumed to be dead. The boat was one of 50 vessels that were racing around South Farallon Island when it was swept out of control and onto several rocks. It floundered there, but in the process four men were thrown from the yacht. Three more men were later thrown from the boat but were all rescued and sustained minor injuries.
An emergency transmission alerted the California Air National Guard and the Coast Guard of the accident. Although they rushed to the scene, weather conditions prevented a full-out rescue attempt.
