A bicyclists was killed when he was hit by a minivan in Compton. After hitting the bicyclists, the driver of the minivan fled the scene.
The accident occurred around 8 a.m. at the intersection of Dwight Avenue and Compton Boulevard. Police were tipped off that the accident was a hit and run after viewing surveillance videos from a market across the street shows. The videos show the driver getting out of the van, walking over to the victim, getting back in the van, and driving away. Witnesses speculate that the driver knew what had happened and fled the scene because he was scared.
After the driver drove away, a witness ran over to the victim and called 911. Firefighters tried to help the victim, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is still trying to determine who is at fault for the accident, but one witness said it appeared as if the bicyclist ran the light at the corner. The witness said the driver appeared to be going the speed limit.
