9 People Drown Everyday in the US
Posted By Law Offices of Gerald L. Marcus

Did you know that in the United States, nine people drown everyday? A swimming pool accident can happen to anyone, if you aren't careful. According to recent statistics, children are more likely to be the victim of a drowning incident. For example, children between the ages of 1 to 4 years old are more likely to drown in a residential pool; it is also the leading cause of accidental injury-related death for that age group. Male children are twice as likely to drown than female children are.

Nonfatal drownings are of great concern as well, for they can cause long-term disabilities  such as permanent loss of basic functioning, learning disabilities, and memory problems.

You can prevent drowning-related injuries by installing four-sided fencing around your pool, a preventative measure that can decrease the chance of drowning accidents by 50 to 90 percent. In addition, you should always watch your child when they are planning in or around the pool. Sadly enough, in almost 90 percent of child-drowning deaths, a parent claims to have been watching his or her child.

Father Finds 24 Year Old Daughter Dead in Swimming Pool
Posted By Law Offices of Gerald L. Marcus

A father returned home to find his 24 year old daughter dead in his swimming pool near Singleton last week. Police are still investigating the mysterious death of this otherwise seemingly healthy young woman, and they have ordered blood tests to determine whether alcohol was a factor in her decease.

The police believed that the woman could have been in the pool for quite some time, as far back as the night before she was discovered. Her father told police that she was alone in the house the night before. Sergeant Peter Robertson, acting crime manager for Hunter Valley, commented that "It is very unusual for a 24-year-old to simply have a medical condition where they cannot get themselves out of a pool."

Police have cordoned off the area and the forensic team is collecting evidence for the investigation. In addition, the sergeant will need to wait for the full results of the autopsy before they can determine for sure how long she was in the pool for.

2 Year Old in Critical Condition after Drowning Accident
Posted By Law Offices of Gerald L. Marcus

A drowning accident in a backyard pond nearly proved fatal and has left a two-year-old boy in critical condition.  Investigators in Winterhaven, Florida are reporting that a Samuel Baker of Bartow was visiting his godparents when he left their care and fell into the water.

In a statement, Melissa Simmons told Polk County deputies that she and her boyfriend, Sainville Diga, were inside their home watching Samuel from an open front door.  Samuel was sitting on the front porch when Simmons says she went to get dish soap from the kitchen.  When Simmons returned, Samuel was gone.

Simmons searched the house, but soon after noticed one of the boy's flip-flops near the pond.  Samuel, who can't swim, was found floating face down in the water by Diga as he searched the pond.  Simmons performed CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene.

Due to the seriousness of his condition, the boy was taken to Winter Haven Hospital before being flown to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Drowning Leads to Deaths of Twin Toddlers
Posted By Law Offices of Gerald L. Marcus

In Massachusetts, twin sisters were found dead in their family's swimming pool.  Police say that the girls drowned after removing the pool's remote cover.

Officers were called to the residence this past Saturday at approximately 10:20 AM after they received reports of "babies in a pool".  They gave CPR to the two year old girls, Veronica and Angelina Andreottola, before taking them to Union Hospital.  Once they arrived at the medical facility, the girls were pronounced dead as a result of the swimming pool drowning.

The girl's mother, Crystal Andreottola, was at home when the accident occurred.  She said the girls managed to open the pool covering on their own, but police are still investigating.  Officers say that no charges will be filed as foul play was not suspected.

Posted By Law Offices of Gerald L. Marcus

In Sterling Heights, a two year old boy that was found floating face down in his family's swimming pool has died.

On Monday, his family made the decision to disconnect the life support systems of young Joseph Daignault.  Sterling Heights Police Lt. Luke Riley said that the boy died shortly after.

Last week Wednesday, Joseph's older siblings were in an above-ground swimming poll before he supposedly climbed a ladder and went into the pool by himself.  He entered the pool at approximately 6:45 PM while his mother was home.  However, his mother did not notice that he was missing until a few minutes later.

Since the accident, Joseph had been on life support at Children's Hospital of Michigan until the family decided to disconnect him from support.

  Swimming Pool Safety Tips
Posted By Law Offices of Gerald L. Marcus

Summer time is here and for many parents, it is time to take the kids to local beaches, public pools or backyard pools to swim. While swimming is always a lot of fun, it is important that parents remain cautious as countless swimming pool accidents and drowning accidents occur annually.  Below, we have provided several pool safety tips that will help parents keep their children safe in the water:

Stay with kids at all times and be sure to watch them.  Swimming pool accident can occur within minutes, so it is important to keep an eye on children.

Use life jackets in place of inflatable inner tubes or arm bands.  Remember, inflatable safety devices can deflate and are not as safe as life jackets.

Keep small children within an arm's length.  Toddlers and young children have weak arms and may not be able to stay afloat in a pool.

Learn CPR.  It is always a great idea to know emergency response techniques that could safe children's lives, especially if you own a pool.

Are you or your child a swimming pool accident victim?  If so, a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer from the Law Offices of Gerald L. Marcus can help you.  Contact our legal team today!
